SAT and ACT Terminology

American Indian/Alaskan Native – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America)
who maintains cultural identification through tribal affiliation or community attachment.

Asian – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian Subcontinent, including, for example,

Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Black/African American – An American of African, and especially of black African, descent.

Combined SAT Score – The sum of the highest SAT verbal and SAT math scores reported for determining student admission.

Composite ACT Score – The highest reported ACT score used to determine student admission. The CHE does not collect individual scores on the

four ACT test sections: English, mathematics, reading, science.

Gender – The CHE collects gender information on all enrolled students and faculty following the federal Integrated Postsecondary Education Data
System (IPEDS) policy which currently does not distinguish between sex and gender and requires institutions to report gender as either
female or male. Institutions are allowed to determine the method for reporting individuals as male or female when gender is unknown or self-

report as neither female nor male.

Hispanic/Latino – A person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or other Spanish culture of origin, regardless of race.
This category is mutually exclusive with the race categories. CHE methodology does not permit the reporting of these students under
               additional race categories.

International Student – A person who is not a citizen or national of the United States and who is in this country on a visa or temporary basis and

does not have the right to remain indefinitely. This category is mutually exclusive with the other race/ethnicity categories. CHE methodology
does not permit the reporting of these students under additional race or ethnicity categories.
