Tregothnan - English
Tea from Cornwall
When the first tea was grown in England in 1999 it
took six years to produce a crop. Now, after just
three years of development, the tea robot (teabot) is
being rolled out to pluck some of the most British
tea in history. It is this kind of innovation that will
propel tea to a much higher level. The development
of the tea-picking robot was driven by the labour
shortage, skills and staff shortages challenge
affecting tea at every stage from ‘garden to lips’.
Now, Tregothnan is testing innovations with top tea
venues around the world, including fellow BSA MARCH/APRIL 2023 | ISSUE 29
members, to overcome many of the current labour
challenges. Necessity really is the mother of
invention.
