was labeled Building 101D. We only forgot one small
thing – restrooms! This was especially dicey for our
female personnel, especially if they were pregnant. It was
a long walk to get to the restrooms outside our building in
the manufacturing shop area.
The new LOT organization was sort of like a company
within a company. Our engineers and technicians came
from several disciplines including materials, propulsion,
aerodynamics, design, electronics, operations analysis,
manufacturing, contracts, administration, and security.
All in all Dave and I were responsible for about 70 souls.
One of our initial jobs was to solve the material problem
that got me into this new and bewildering technology,
since that material was going to be one of the baselines
that would make us unique and make it possible to win
the new weapon program that MDMSC (we were no
longer MDAC) was preparing to bid. Ultimately, we did
find a way to make this material consistently, but we
simply did not have enough time, or intelligence, to
perfect its application to real-world structural
arrangements.
