variables that, for the most part, should be measurable
and therefore amenable to solution.
After about a month of setting up the measuring
equipment and taking a lot of data for each material batch,
our final results were ---ZIP!!! We could not relate any of
the measured process variables to the final
electromagnetic properties of this material. Even the
measurement methods used in our RADAR range to
measure critical electromagnetic properties provided
inconsistent results. It looked like this problem had “lots
of legs.”
When I reported our lack of definitive findings and failure
to solve the problem to senior management (including the
company president), Harold Motchan asked me what it
might take of my time to get to the bottom of the issue and
find some resolution.
My answer: “Why Harold it would have to be a full-time
assignment!!!” His answer was simple: “Whiteson, kiss
your current job goodbye. You are no longer Chief M&P
Engineer! You’re an expert in stealth technology.”
