titanium castings for the aerospace industry. Howard had

installed an early model titanium casting furnace in their
Milwaukee facility. The bid was a disaster, and Howard
lost the competition. In the meanwhile, I learned

something about the production of nickel base precision
investment castings for the jet engine industry and other
contractors. This was not a happy relationship for a lot of

reasons. The 100-mile commute was wearing me down,
and I had no illusions that my job at Howard would likely
not survive much longer. I contacted Titanium Metals

               Corporation for a job.

               TITANIUM METALS CORPORATION (TIMET)

               February 1958 to November 1960

A call to Ward M, head of marketing and technical
services at TIMET yielded almost instantaneous results. I
had worked with TIMET during my time as titanium

metallurgist for Douglas, so we knew each other very
well. In addition, TIMET was still a growing company
and definitely had need of people to staff the marketing

and technical services operation. The only question Ward
had was “how soon can you get here?”
