TIMET’s home office was in lower Manhattan, New York
on the 12th floor at 33 E. Broadway. On checking in for
work, Ward indicated that our best bet for lodging would
be in New Jersey to escape the New York City tax when
working outside the city, and also because housing was a
lot less expensive than in and around New York. We
settled in Ridgewood, NJ – renting a house that was in a
very pleasant residential neighborhood.
My first few weeks on the job aimed to get me more
thoroughly schooled in the production operations for
titanium which meant visiting the various mills that made
sheet, plate, bar, rod and forging stock, as well as a revisit
to the melting and research facilities in Henderson,
Nevada.
I also began the process of familiarizing myself to the
array of TIMET’s customer community to better
understand their applications for our products, as well as
our competitive standing in the industry.
There were three major titanium producers in the USA at
that time. I knew the job would entail some travel, but
most the east-coast customers were tightly grouped so
there was no great concern. TIMET also tried to make
