Bard High School Early College Smart Scholars Program

Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) is a nationally recognized Year Opened: 2010
public high school early college with two New York metropolitan
area campuses and a combined enrollment of 1,167. BHSEC 2014-15 Enrollment:
Manhattan and BHSEC Queens operate as a partnership between 121 at BHSEC Manhattan
the New York City Department of Education and Bard College. 187 at BHSEC Queens
The schools opened in 2001 and 2008, respectively. The student
body at the Manhattan and Queens campuses is broadly diverse Male/Female Ratio: 140:168
in ethnic and economic background. Smart Scholars make up
26.4% of the student body. Enrollment by Race/Ethnicity:
African American – 19.2%
Admission to BHSEC is based on the student’s academic record, Hispanic – 28.9%
writing and math assessments, and an interview. Successful Asian/Pacific Islander – 38%
applicants typically have a minimum grade average of 85% in American Indian – 0.6%
their 7th grade year. Multiracial – 0.6%
White – 12.7%
Students enter BHSEC in the 9th grade and spend their first two
years of high school learning the skills necessary to succeed in Percentage Free/Reduced Price Lunch
college. After 10th grade, provided that they earn a 2.0 GPA or (FRPL): 64%
higher, these intellectually motivated 16-year-olds enter the
college program at BHSEC. At the end of four years, BHSEC Average Number of College Credits
students graduate with both a New York State Regents diploma Earned by Grade Level:

To prepare our Smart Scholars for the academically challenging Year 1 – 30
environment at BHSEC we offer a 3-week summer enrichment Year 2 – 30
program nurturing student’s abilities in 9th grade Mathematics,
introducing the writing seminar approach, and teaching critical Average Number of College Credits
study skills and success habits. The summer program culminates Earned by 2014 Graduates: 60
with a trip to Bard College where the students participate in
science laboratory experiments and discussions with Bard faculty. 2014 Graduation Rate: 100%
In addition, Smart Scholars are supported academically
throughout their four years through the Learning Centers at each AA Degree Completion Rate: 96%
school.
