"You see, if we don't have permission to bring them
back here, the dead are simply recycled to live out
another lifetime until they are ready to die or until they
find a family that is willing to let them go when their time
comes again. The Law of Free Will mandates that those
who are really against the idea of dying are free to
make a choice not to die."
Fred's eyes got saucer large. "You mean that if I
had refused to go with you, I could have thwarted death
and avoided the whole thing?"
"Well, sure," said Edger. "But the catch is that
reincarnation happens without any transfer of cognitive
memory, and your Soul gets recycled into a new body.
It's not like you get to stay who you are and live out your
days being an immortal."
"Oh, that's no fun," said Fred, lowering his eyes to
his plate.
"No, your essence continues but is embodied in
another empty casing. You're allowed to live on, but
you have to start from scratch without the knowledge
you had at death. Oh, some of it lingers – that's where
de'ja'vu comes from – but most real working knowledge
and memory is wiped away."
"I'm not quite sure I understand," said the little old
lady across the table from George. She was clearly
someone's grandmother but seemed pretty together for
a woman in her eighties. She had dyed her hair blonde
and wore comfy jeans, sneakers, and a Nantucket
Marina sweatshirt.
"Okay, do you know how computers work?" asked
Edgar.
