"Yes, my grandchildren taught me how to use one
a few years ago. I got quite good at creating electronic
scrapbooks with all my darling's photos." Her eyes
beamed with a pride that I'm sure was rightly earned.
"Fantastic. Okay, imagine a hard drive wipe on
your computer. Same concept. Although there may
be lingering binary snippets of code, for the most part,
everything that was once stored on that particular hard
drive is gone, and you start with the thing empty and
fresh. That's how Soul recycling works."
"Well, that's a bit of a disappointment, now isn't it?"
George seemed simultaneously dismayed and relieved
that he didn't try to avoid dying.
"Well, I should say so. I would be lost without the
memories of my darling grandchildren," said Agnes.
"No, I've lived a good, long life. Better to leave with my
faculties intact. But I do have one question, Edgar; what
happens to those reincarnated Souls when they finally
choose to die? Which lifetime memories do they retain?
What do they get to keep, the first lifetime or the
second?"
"That's a great question, Agnes, and yet another of
the disappointments of Soul recycling. You see, those
who are reincarnated are left with a very confused
history. Most can remember individual events, places,
and snippets of time, but sadly, they have little emotional
thread to bind it all together. It's a little like waking from
a dream. You remember the essence or maybe a few
key details of the dream, but never the whole thing. It's
akin to Alzheimer's for the dead. That's how those Souls
must spend their eternity. Never really understanding if
they actually lived a life or dreamed it."
