in the one empty chair at the table and began to
collect a plate of leftovers. I could tell that Liza was less
than impressed with this woman, her table manners,
especially. Liza was tolerant, but I got the impression
that she would have rather the woman never showed
up. The rest of us stared at each other, looking for
someone who was in on the joke, but confusion filled the
room.
"Ladies and Gentlemen," said Edgar. "May I
introduce you to Miss Mortality." Edger, too, tried to be
civil; but you could tell that there was some rift between
the three of them. And, it was clear Miss Mortality didn't
really care.
"Oh please, Edgar. Much too formal. Call me
Marji." she said, taking a sip of wine and positioning a
clump of mashed potatoes on her fork.
"How nice to see you again, Marji," said Liza,
feigning politeness.
"Yeah, whatever." Marji picked up a drumstick
and began to gnaw enthusiastically.
"You didn't really answer my question," said
George, with a look on his face like he was still hoping
that someone would give him a straight answer. None
of us had gotten many of those since our arrival, and I
could tell it was beginning to irritate him. "What do you
mean we were 'warned'?"
"Look," said Marji in between mouthfuls of chicken
and gulps of wine. "I've visited all of you, at least once,
sometimes more than once... depending. I told each
of you that your time was coming close to an end. I
warned you. You needed to either change your path to
