extend your time on Earth or accept your fate."
"I don't remember you visiting me." said a puzzled
Agnes.
"Oh sure you do, that one time when three of your
friends died of heart attacks in the same year, and you
thought you could still handle life without your blood
thinners. Remember that overnight stay at the hospital
and the nurse who reminded you to take your
medication regularly? Well, that was me." She
swallowed another mouthful of potatoes. "But did you
pay attention? Of course not." She reached gratuitously
across the table for a dinner roll, nearly tumbling the
gravy boat. "Everyone thinks they can just ignore Miss
Mortality when she comes knocking at their door, and
everything will be just fine. Wrong!" Marji was pretty
worked up at this point but somehow managed to help
herself to another heaping spoonful of potatoes and
corn.
"I don't get it," said Fred. "I don't remember you
coming to visit me. And I'm sure that with a personality
like yours, you'd be pretty tough to forget."
"Well... remember that little boat ride you took out
about two miles off shore on that dreary day that quickly
turned into a storm? Do you remember your fourteen-
foot aluminum boat capsizing... Do you remember the
lovely DNR officer that came to your rescue and
reminded you that you really should have checked the
weather reports and had a radio with you before you
headed out to fish that day? Well, you guessed it,
genius, that was me! I know a DNR uniform isn't really all
that flattering, but I'd think you'd remember the woman
behind the badge."
