Chapter Three
Dinner at The Inn
"Great chicken, Liza," said Edgar as he added
another drumstick to his plate. I don't know what you do
to it, but it's fantastic every time." Edgar raised his glass
and offered a toast. "To Liza, Queen of Purgatory's
kitchen!"
"To Liza!" the table cheered. Liza's cheeks grew a
little flushed, and she demurely nodded her thanks. It
was clear that there was a long history between those
two. Their coy glances were about as well hidden as
fireworks at a Roman Catholic funeral.
One of the newly dead, George, asked the
question that I'm sure Edger gets a lot, and one I was
dying to ask, too. "So, what happens if someone who
dies won't come with you, you know, back to
Purgatory?" George was about forty, wore coke-bottle
glasses and a pocket protector. He looked like a
throwback to the '50s, but Liza assured me he had just
arrived a day or so before I had.
"Well, the people who don't choose to go with me
willingly, or the ones whose families can't or won't let
them go... well, that's where that old concept of
reincarnation comes from." George looked at him
strangely and glanced around the table for some sign of
recognition. We returned his stupefied stares, and
Edger, unfazed by our confusion, continued.
