– Catholicos Gomidas (7th C.), an out-
standing hymnologist and theologian, who
compiled a collection (florilegium) of quota-
tions from church fathers dealing mainly
with christology.
– Anania Shiragatsi (7th C.), a great
mathematician, philosopher, astronomer,
and geographer, who is considered Ar-
menia's first scientist.
– Vrtanes Kertogh (7th C.), a well known
liturgist; his treatise On the Iconoclasts is
regarded as a serious attempt in defence of
the veneration of images in the church.
– Hovhannes Otsnetsi-Imasdaser (8th C.),
a prominent theologian, his Treatises on the
Church, Against the Paulicians and Against the
Phantasiastae are expositions of the doctrinal
teachings of the Armenian Church and
refutations of the two heresies.
– Hovhannes Traskhanagerdatsi (10th C.),
a distinguished historian, whose work covers
the history of the Armenian people from the
beginning with particular reference to the
Armenian Church’s catholicoi.
– Tovma Arzrouni (10th C.), historian of
the dynasty of Arzrouni; his work deals
with the 9th and 10th Centuries.
– Krikor Narekatsi (10th C.), an inter-
nationally renowned poet, philosopher,
theologian, and highly venerated mystic.
