Show students the following example as some students may make an error while rounding a similar number.
Example: Round 14,957 to the nearest hundred.
Step 1. Underline the digit that you want to round to. 14,957
Step 2. Look at the digit to the right. The digit in the tens place is 5. Since 5 5, the digit 9 needs to be

increased by 1. Since 9 becomes 10 if increased by 1, the 9 becomes 0, and the thousands place
will increase from 4 to 6.
Step 3. When rounded to the nearest hundred, 14,957 15,000.
