dividing, and making fractions. Splitting is directly related to subtraction, but splitting into equal numbers is
important in understanding the concepts of division and fractions. In a similar way, gathering is directly related 71Operations
to addition, but is also the basics for multiplication. Fingers, rocks, cards, and other objects will be used in
activities for practicing splitting and gathering. Use marbles or candies in a guessing
game to have students guess the number

Split and Gather Game 73Operations

Playing mathematical games will help students perceive math as being fun and provide an effective
method of practicing math concepts. The following is a game that will familiarize students with splitting
and gathering.

Finger Game
Player 1 says a number from 1 to 9 and holds up that number of fingers. Player 2 finds the number that
makes player 1's number 10, when gathered, and holds up that number of fingers.
Number Card Game
Mix and lay out the numbers from 1 to 9. Two players will each pick a number and place the card next
to their ear so that only the other player can see the card. The referee will call out what number is made
when the two players’ numbers are gathered. The first person who guess their number correctly wins.

72 NUMINO Challenge K2

Students must gather numbers according to the given conditions. Do not have them just
solve problems. Rather, have them gather various numbers on their own. Another good
method is to have them erase some numbers from the problem to find the right answer.
