Knowing and finding directions is an essential part of our daily lives. Children begin to use directions when 101Spatial Sense
they find their way to their friends’ houses, walk to school, or navigate around their new school. Ask students
about the direction of places they go on a daily basis. Asking, “Is it to the right or to the left?” will limit
students’ responses to one of the two, so guide them to finding their own method of explaining directions or the
location of objects.

A map takes a 3 dimensional space and places the important information on a 2

needed. Having the students draw their own maps will increase their spatial
perception and abstract reasoning.
