P. 71
When several tasks associated with a particular function are
completed, that function is accomplished
The major guideline is to manage the size of the tasks
In general, shoot for tasks that include approximately five to
fifteen steps or guidelines
Defining Steps or Guidelines Associated with Each Task
As you identify each of the major tasks associated with the
functions, you will indicate whether it is near-transfer (based
on a procedure) or far-transfer (based on principles or
guidelines)
If the task is primarily procedural, specify the steps that make
up the procedure. If it is principle-based, define the guidelines
The number of steps and guidelines will vary, but in general
should not exceed a five-to-fifteen range in order to translate
your tasks into brief lessons
Employees with more experience can generally manage longer
lessons with more complex information, but short lessons are
necessary for trainees who are new to the tasks being trained.
Defining Associated Supporting Knowledge
Once you have broken tasks down into steps or guidelines,
there is a final stage to complete the task analysis: identifying
the knowledge associated with the steps or guidelines
To apply this guideline, the supervisor will need to know the
concepts of job-relevant, open-ended, behavioral, and
discriminatory questions
Most supporting knowledge involves concepts or facts
How small to make your step or guideline and what to
include as knowledge depends both on the job to be
trained and on the background knowledge of your potential
audience
