5. Simulations and Games in e-Learning
A simulation is a model of a real-world environment that is
rule-based
There are two main types of instructional simulations:
operational and conceptual:
An operational simulation is designed primarily to teach
procedures
Conceptual simulations have been used in the
educational arena to teach science concepts
6. Online Games and Learning
To qualify as a game, an online event must offer
the learner a challenge to achieve a goal, respond on
the basis of game rules, offer an interactive high-
engagement experience, and incorporate
consequences
Some of the more common categories of games
include arcade games (also called twitch games) that
reward speed and accuracy of responses, game-show
environments that usually reward accuracy of recall or
recognition of facts or concepts, and strategy or
adventure games that may involve a story line and
reward decisions that reflect the use of guidelines
that are the focus of learning
7. Designing for e-Learning
When comparing learning from various types of
digital environments with that from face-to-face
classrooms, we consistently find that what causes
learning is not the delivery medium per se but how
effectively the features of any delivery medium are
used to promote learning
Digital learning requires you to engage learners to
sustain attention and promote learning through
relevant visuals and frequent interactions
