four Cs: Clean, Consistent, Clear, and Controlled by
the learner
3. Audio and Text
Recent research has shown that a complex visual is
better explained by audio narration than by on-
screen text
The reason is that working memory has two
processing centers: one
for visual information and one for phonetic or
auditory information
When you explain a complex visual with text, you
overload the visual center with two visual inputs: a
graphic and the text
Mental overload leads to depressed learning
However, reliance on audio alone can pose a
problem for learners who may lack sound cards or
have hearing disabilities
Therefore, in asynchronous e-learning, offer an
"audio-off" option that will replace audio with on-
screen text
In synchronous forms of e-learning, many tools
offer a closed captioning facility that can be
accessed by those needing it
It's a common myth that learning is better when a
visual is explained by BOTH audio and on-screen
text. The truth, however, is that presenting the
