A Climate of Change
MARCH
By laura Brusseau
In 1906, Andrew Carnegie, a businessman and philan- thropist, donated funds to Franklin to build a library. In return, the city provided the land and promised to take care of it. There are over 1,500 Carnegie Libraries in the United States, and over 2,500 were built between 1883 and 1929. Carnegie believed in the power of libraries and the op- portunities they gave people. He truly understood how they could transform lives.
Today over 100 years later, the Franklin Library is still thriving and has touched countless lives!
Anyone who works in Franklin, owns property in Franklin, or resides in this town can show up to the li- brary located at 310 Central Street and get a free library card! The only thing required is to show a valid ID, proof of employment in the city, or a bill with your address on it. The library averages 20 new
members a month!
