The
devastation from the bombs and the ensuing firefights involving American and Coalition
Forces against Iraqi defenders obliterated the Kuwait Int’l Airport. Buildings were left
uninhabitable due to the instability in the bombed-out structures. Marine LCpl Matt Stuck
seen in the photo above with LCpl Monte L Witcher reveals the ferocity of the firefights.
“Company, attention! Platoon Commanders, take charge of your
Platoons and carry on with the plan of the day.”
The answer came, “Aye-Aye Sir.”
And Delta Company was dismissed, as usual, dispersed, mounted up
vehicles and moved into the areas as directed by Capt Roger “Rock” Pollard.
Gunny and I parked in a nice flat area. The rain had stopped, though
the thunder still rolled, and there was a steady breeze blowing. We opened
all the doors and roof hatches, the Commander's hatch and the Driver's
hatch. The breeze wafted through the vehicle, and for the first time…
comfort without the concern of combat erupting. Delta 5 was parked to the
left of Gunny and me, so I decided to have a chat with the driver, LCpl
Gonder. I asked him if he wanted to go take a look at that bombed-out
building the Captain had spoken of yet promising to keep our distance from
any hazards or falling debris, as many pieces of steel hung suspended from
the rafters some 60 feet in the air. Gonder eagerly agreed.
Upon arriving it was an eerie sight to see the power of the bomb that
had exploded the building. There was a huge crater in the concrete floor
where the bomb had impacted. Debris was strewn from one end of the
