The Short Splice
The short splice is a stout way of permanently joining two lines of equal
material and diameter, and thus lengthening dock lines, towing lines,
anchor rodes and the like. However, the splice forms a bulge that is
double the rope’s normal diameter, so should never be used for lines that
are intended to run through a block or eye.
1. To make a short splice, unlay the strands of two line ends for six to
eight inches. Interlace the three strands from one line with the three
strands of the other, as shown, so each strand lies between two of the
opposite line. This is called “marrying” the two lines. Put a temporary
seizing around the marry where the six strands come together.
