2. After you have married the two lines, take any loose strand (in the
picture above, the red one) from the left-hand line, pass it over the
nearest strand of the right-hand line, then tuck it under the next strand—
going against the lay as in the back splice (pages 64–65). Give both of
the lines a one-third turn away from you and proceed in the same manner
with the next loose strand (yellow) and finally with the third (uncolored)
strand. Take three complete tucks in all.
3. Cut off the seizing and flip the rope so that the part in which the three
tucks have been taken now lies to the left. Pull the remaining three loose
strands tight and work them, one at a time, through the rope as before—
each strand going against the lay, first over and then under a standing
