4. Now take from the left-hand line the strand corresponding to the one
just unlaid, and lay it into the spiraled groove left open by the unlaying.
Stop when you reach the end of the groove, and the two strands meet;
both should have bitter ends of three or four inches.
5. Where the newly laid strand meets its counterpart, make an overhand
knot and pull it tight. Then go back to the crotch, smoothing the new-laid
strand in its groove as you go, and pull the crotch knot tight. Make sure
that both knots have equal tension, and that the tension is sufficient to
snug the strands down into the line but not enough to cause bunching or
an uneven lay anywhere on the line.
