8. Take two tucks with each dangling strand at both ends of the splice
and snip each end off a quarter of an inch from the rope. Then roll the
rope between your palms or underfoot, smoothing each of the knots you
have made. The finished splice should have three inconspicuous bumps
where you have made the overhand knots.
