Rhythm Sticks

*Rhythm is a pattern not a steady beat

*Steady Beat is the heartbeat of the song

• “What instrument was Dinah playing?” (banjo)

Ø This question segues to a new instrument: “rhythm sticks.”
• MM demonstrates how to hold & play the rhythm sticks. MF pick up rhythm sticks
and hold them, showing rest position with “Shave and A Haircut” tune
• Sing “Dinah” while playing the rhythm sticks to the steady beat
• Word of the week: beat
• Practice keeping the steady beat with rhyme, “Engine, Engine”

FYI: S will not be as comfortable keeping the beat with the sticks, as they were with
patting their laps. They will grow accustomed to the sticks and are encouraged to listen

for the beat.

Management tips:

Handing out instruments: T can pass out instruments while S play a game. Set instruments
on the floor but don’t allow S to pick up until instructed. Teach when S are sitting on the
floor or desk.
