The Adventure Boys
A I R
The Adventure Boys drove in four cars to the old, but newly confi gured Brooklyn Navy Yard, to visit
its historical museum (the rest of the yard was off limits). We spent a couple of hours in Building 92
where the yard‘s history (it goes back to Post Revolutionary War times) is told in old pictures, photos,
news articles, models and videos. Lunch was at
Erwin Tarlow’s cousin’s clam and oyster bar.
It looked ancient and we thought it might have
a noteworthy past, but its only known history
was its previous use by an exterminator. This
oyster bar had been morphed from pesticides
to pickled onions as witnessed by its unusual
menu of:
• Liver pate – sourdough toast, pickled onions
• Gravlex – bagel, cream cheese, butter, onions,
pickled beets, capers
In contrast to the ten of us traveling to the
Navy Yard in four gasoline guzzling, pollution
creating, internal combustion powered vehicles,
Lenny Basta transported seven of us in his
electric, pollution free Tesla to the 9/11
Memorial & Museum in downtown Manhattan. The museum includes a detailed history of the 9/11
events along with many signifi cant and interesting artifacts. From there we visited the world (or at
least NYC) famous Katz’s Deli for delicious, delectable (and also expensive) pastrami sandwiches.
The museum was thought provoking and the deli was palate satisfying.
We are the Adventure Boys who like to have fun and do athletic stuff. The group grew out of the many outdoor activities we enjoy doing.
We try to organize activities that at least seven or eight of us are interested in. Anyone interested can call me, Irv Zaroff at 631-223-3392
or by email at irvzaroff@optonline.net. This year’s plans include kayaking, sailing, and bike riding in NYC, Long Island and possibly Shel-
ter Island. Maybe drive mopeds on Block Island. Other possible ventures include zip lining, tubing and skeet shooting. Plus more.
