responsibility of verifying compliance on the part of the exporters with all
types of regulations in force in the country. For their own record purposes,
they have devised the "Shipping Bill". No shipping company or airline will
accept any export cargo unless the customs authorities have granted
their permission on the shipping bill. Along with the shipping bill, commercial
invoices and packing lists are also to be submitted. The carrier, whether it
be a ship or an aeroplane, has its own documents. In the case of ship, a
very important document which comes in the picture is the "Bill of Lading"
and in case of shipment by air, this document is known as "Airway Bill".
Further, the exporter must insure the goods against the risks while in
transit and therefore has to take a marine insurance policy. There are also
a number of other aspects which have to be looked into. For example,
there may be floor price regulations or export of some products may be
canalized through designated bodies like the STC. Measurement and
weighment and other such regulations may also have to be complied with.
Again under the scheme of governmental assistance to the exporters,
there is need for documentation. As soon as the goods are exported, the
exporter becomes eligible for duty drawback, etc. Thus, at every stage of
exportation, one requires one document after another.
                             Principal Documents

Some of the principal documents of export are as follows:
                                 1. Commercial Invoice/Export Invoice: This is the basic
