“If we find ourselves challenged by strong and
overwhelming emotions, our feelings can be so intense that
we can feel as though we ourselves are out of our own
                                                       control.

This in itself then tends to generate further anxiety and fear
about the way that we’re feeling.

If we ‘feel bad’ - about ‘feeling bad’ then inadvertently we
generate a secondary package of emotion on top of an
                                        already challenging experience.

If we become ‘anxious or angry - about feeling anxious or
angry’ then we have just doubled the emotional load!

This is such a common experience and is incredibly
unhelpful for us. The last thing we need at times of
emotional difficulty is to make ourselves feel even worse!

The key to changing this lies in our ability to learn to press a
pause button: to notice and to listen without adding further
anxiety or fear to the mix and to re-evaluate our situation
from a position of considered choice.”
