Your Home as a Source of Infection
The aim of the research work Your Home as a Source of Infection, which was carried out by
the sixth grade students, is to determine which disinfectant removes microorganisms from the
kitchen table better. For the purposes of the research work, the students used a disinfectant that
they prepared themselves (UVIB) and a disinfectant with nano particles (NANO). Disinfectant
UVIB consists of 70% medical alcohol and lemongrass essential oil in a ratio of 100 ml of
medical alcohol and 5 drops of lemongrass essential oil. Lemongrass essential oil contains
active substances that act antiseptically and bactericidally. The student's assumption was that
the UVIB disinfectant would be better at removing microorganisms than the nano particle
disinfectant.
Students measured a 10 x 10 cm square on the kitchen table with a ruler. With a sterile swab
moistened in a sterile physiological solution, they took a sample from the surface of the kitchen
table and planted it on the nutrient medium of blood agar and left it at room temperature as a
control. On two other parts of the table, they measured squares of equal dimensions of 10 x 10
cm and disinfected them with UVIB and NANO. After 7 days, numerous colonies of
microorganisms were seen on the control nutrient media. On nutrient media after treatment with
disinfectants UVIB and NANO, the number of colonies of microorganisms was lower, in favor
of the disinfectant with NANO particles. It turned out that the assumption was not correct and
that the disinfectant with NANO particles removes microorganisms from the kitchen table
better than the UVIB disinfectant. The results should be taken with a lot of caution due to the
limited number of samples, different temperature and humidity conditions in the students'
homes and the conditions were not controlled (laboratory).
