THE POWER OF TAKING THE PLUNGE
There is a story about the word Ubuntu, which,
to a certain African tribe means, “I am what I
am because of who we all are.”
It is said that an anthropologist who was
studying the customs and lifestyle of this tribe
spent a lot of time with the children. One
particular day he decided to play a game with
them. He knew they loved candy, so he made a
trip to a neighboring town to buy some. He
arranged quite a few pieces in a decorative
basket and placed the prize at the base of a tree.
Excitedly, he called all the children together
explaining that they were going to play a game,
and the winner would receive the prize, “When
I shout ‘now’, everyone will run as fast as you
can to the tree! The first one there wins the
entire basket of candy.”
Eager to participate, the children lined up and
waited for the shout. As soon as the
anthropologist yelled, “Now!” all the children
grabbed each other by the hand and began
running as fast as they could toward the tree.
Arriving at exactly the same time, they divided
the candy and began to enjoy their prize.
Slightly stunned, the anthropologist asked why
they chose to all run together when the winner
would have had all the candy to himself.
