THE POWER OF TAKING THE PLUNGE
around you, cortisol won’t do its job. However,
if you’re in an environment where you can’t
trust the person to your left or to your right, it’s
like you’re walking around with a cortisol drip,
very much like a patient who has a morphine
drip constantly entering the bloodstream. The
sad part of my new environment was that it
wasn’t only the inmates that you couldn’t trust,
it was the staff as well. I was not enjoying the
changes that I was experiencing in me. I became
passionate to change the prison-work
environment and it’s still a tedious and tasking
process. Changing any culture is tremendously
challenging.
The lack of trust does affect increases in cortisol
production, and a lack of trust is nothing more
than subtle fear (continuous fear in small
doses). Chapter Five will be helpful for you in
giving you a deeper understanding of that ‘four
letter word.’
As we discussed in the last chapter, no one
really likes change, particularly change that
happens to you, as opposed to change that you
choose and drive yourself.
