THE POWER OF TAKING THE PLUNGE
Japanese girls who ran their car into a ditch.
This tough Marine suddenly was turned into a
helpless cripple as I lifted the tiny car from its
entrapment. Other than the back injury, no
other sickness or disease entered my body until
I began my career in the prison system. Within
six months of employment, I had a headache at
least once per week, and I had the flu twice. I
knew that it had everything to do with my new
environment. When I ask the question to
audiences as to why the sudden change in my
health, they don’t hesitate to say, ‘stress.’ I then
go on to say, “Do you not think that a Marine
deals with stressful situations?” They seem to
be stumped when I ask that question, but they
obviously know the correct answer. Our
common sense tells us that life-threatening
situations are stressful to anyone. So, what
made the big difference in my immune system?
There is nothing better than getting shot at and missed.
It’s really great.

Marine Corps General (Retired)
