RANDY PERDUE
words on that poster stuck with me forever.
Some who read this may remember seeing it. It
was a poem called, Desiderata — believed to
have been discovered in a Baltimore church in
1692, but the truth was that American writer,
Max Ehrmann, (1872–1945), wrote it in 1927.
It just so happened that it was discovered in the
church that was built in 1692.
I had the poster hanging on the wall in my
bedroom. I would frequently read it, until one
day I discovered that I had it memorized. I still
remember a lot of the words. In fact, a couple
of years ago, I was at a friend's office and his
secretary had it hanging on the wall beside her
desk. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to
show off. I said, "Do you see that poem
hanging on the wall?" I then turned away from
it and started quoting it. She immediately
gasped and said that I had a photographic
memory. I then revealed the truth and
explained to her that I had it on a poster when
I was a teen and that I just read it until I
committed it to memory. She was still
impressed.
