4. ALAM 2018: Highlights
Between November 13th and 16th of 2018, former and current Latin-
American Ambassadors joined more than 1,500 attendees from 26
countries in Santiago, Chile, for the most important Microbiology
Conference in Latin America: the XXIV Latin-American Congress on
Microbiology (ALAM 2018).
The organizing committee, which includes ASM Country Ambassador to
Chile - Claudia Saavedra, prepared an amazing and comprehensive
scientific program covering many emerging subjects in Microbiology. The
opening lecture was given by Stanley Maloy, fellow of the American
Academy of Microbiology and former ASM’s president, who talked about
phages and the evolution of new infectious diseases. Following Dr Maloy’s
lecture, ALAM was officially open with a night full of cheese and wine
(some of Chile’s specialties).

On November 14 , current and former ASM Ambassadors gathered to discuss potential collaborations within Latin America
and relevant topics to be covered in the next ALAM, taking place in Paraguay in 2020. The ASM booth, set up by Andrés Opazo
Capurro - YA to Chile, was also a meeting point for ASM Ambassadors and special guests such as Dr Roberto Kolter.

No matter where you are from, you always feel welcome at ALAM as it truly represents the Latin American atmosphere:
between great posters and unforgettable lectures, you can chat, laugh, care, play, hope and have fun (as Kaique, son of YA to
Brazil - Tatiana Pinto, below )
