players had a split tee-off - half the players would tee-off on course
one, the other half on course two. The scores were low as expected.
Dr. Brad Lebo would score a 22 and take a one stroke lead over Sid
Davis, Terry Phillips and John Bambling. It would be the last time Dr.
Lebo would be near the
Earl Davis (L) Chuck Palm (R)
lead and only one of the
followers would remain in
contention to the end. In
the APA division, Earl
Davis and Chuck Palm
would establish
themselves as the
contenders for the title,
with Clayton Craft within
a stroke. Chuck Palm would take the lead at the end of round 2, but by
the end of the day he would return to the number two position as Davis
would take a one stroke lead over Palm and a three-stroke lead over
Craft. The course scores remained consistent throughout day one. In
the APA division, the average for Earl Davis
round one was 31.1, the average
for round two was 29.2 and the
average for round three was
31.9. Although the scoring
average remained relatively the
same during the first two rounds,
an interesting phenomenon occurred during round three. The heat of
the sun started drying the carpets, making them slower. The consistent
remark by PPA and APA players alike was, “I’m lagging each hole by
several inches.” The carpet was forcing players to adjust to the slower
transition – the leaders adjusted – but many players struggled.
