Taiwan has also fruited from the same success stories of using
movies as a marketing channel. A 1989 Taiwanese historical
drama film by Hou Hsiao-hsien, A City of Sadness, revived the
ghost towns of Jiufen and Jinguashi. 19 years later, Cape No 7
by director Wei Te-Sheng, a Taiwanese romance comedic music-
drama film that wove between the Japanese colonial period and
the modern times, telling the realization of love and dreams. The
film highlights the sense of humor, comical conversations and life
stories in the Taiwanese dialect, and touched audiences across
a wide spectrum of age groups. The film was so popular that
it grossed nearly NT$500 billion in the country. In the movie,
Aga’s home, Uncle Mao’s house, and the ancient residence of
Grandmother Yuko have also become popular tourist destinations.
This is the best success story to date in Taiwan to have promoted
tourism through movies.
