Remembering Thilaga Mylvaganam
It is with a heavy heart that my wife Shanti, children Gana and
Shankhari mourn the passing away of THILAGA MYLVAGANAM –
‘Thilaga Acca’ to Shanti and me, and ‘Aunty’ to our children.
In 1974, my family was living down Police Park Avenue, Colombo 4,
Sri Lanka, while I was away in UK on a Scholarship. The Mylvaganam
family moved into the upstairs of the same house. Thilaga Acca was
like a guardian, and as with the rest of her family, she looked after
my family as well. Within a short time, she became friendly with the
residents in our Lane. She was teaching at Royal Primary, where
Skanda, our eldest son, was studying - he was 6 yrs old at that time.
Gana was just a baby. She volunteered to take Skanda to School and
back which was a great help. Unfortunately, we lost Skanda under
tragic circumstances in 1991.
We migrated to Australia in 1995 and landed in Sydney. She warmly
welcomed us and offered to help us settle down. Circumstances led
us to settle down in Melbourne. She kept in touch with us and so did
the rest of the family.
She had a pure heart and believed in selfless service and right action.
She had a pleasant and happy disposition and a special way to warm
the hearts of everyone she met. She was eager to help anyone who
sought help regardless of whether the person was known to her or
not. Her mischievous smile is unforgettable. She had a sense of
humour, always cracking jokes at my expense. She loved Chocolates
and behaved like a small girl when pulled up for that.
We will cherish her memory for the rest of our lives.
May her soul rest in peace.
