Memories of Aunty Thilahi
My father got to know Uncle Myl and Aunty Thilahi through Aunty’s
brother in his bachelor days and kept up a life-long friendship from then
on. My parents’ wedding was held at their home in Mount Lavania,
Colombo. Our families were firm friends from then on.
From my earliest memories, I recall that we used to visit each other’s
homes, at least twice a week. When I was young I always admired Aunty
Thilahi as one who was confidant, smart and well spoken. Aunty
Thilahi had counted on my father as a friend and doctor, and would ‘call
Yoga for everything’, whether it was for advice or for his medical
attention to her family or friends. There were no formalities between
our families.
Aunty and Uncle always maintained an ‘open house’ where we would be
offered food and Elephant House soft drinks at all times. They were like
second parents to me and my sister, Sashi. We could trust them to be
there for us in times of need. It was the same for the Mylvaganam
children.
When I moved to Australia and I settled in Adelaide, I continued my
friendship with Arul Mylvaganam. When I visited Sydney, Arul’s sister
Jano and Aunty Thilahi came to visit me and it was so lovely to see
Aunty Thilahi - she had not aged and looked just the same.
I can never forget the good old days where friendships were genuine.
I will always have fond memories of Aunty Thilahi.
Though we now live in different parts of Australia, we are together in the
same country again and will continue our friendship.
I am sure that’s what our parents would have wanted.
