DIGITAL DIVIDES
“Many people believe that everyone, regardless of circumstances, should be able to benefit from the
information Age and that technology-enabled information and services should be available to all.”
I am going to investigate and define the meaning of the term ´digital divide´ and explain the factors
leading to the digital world, linking and creating ways that “Information Age” has influenced online users
(mainly in West Africa, Ghana), and businesses and the possible ways to ensure that the gap is reduced.
As well as, an increase in ICT technological skills does not cause an effect on people and the society or
the country.
Digital Divide
Digital divide is a term that refers to the gap between demographics and regions that have access to
modern information and communications technology, and those that don't or have restricted access.
This technology can include the telephone, television, personal computers and the Internet. It refers to
any inequalities between groups or countries measured in terms of access to, use of, or knowledge of
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Digital divide inside any country refers to
inequalities mainly among individuals and households. “Some researchers suggest that digital divide is
not only about gap in access and connectivity to ICTs only but extends into political and cultural realm of
any society.”
´Digital divide´ refers to those individuals with or without access to internet technology based on their
acceptance of the medium of communication or their acceptance off or to the data policy. I believe
strongly that in some African countries (Ghana), there is a high gap between individuals and the internet
accessibility due to or because of their acceptance to the data protection policy. Data protection policy
is a policy that governs and protects individual’s data from being copied, used or shared with other
people. If a country is likewise refused to accept these polies, they are however has limited access or
restricted access to the data information. The government has control over the use of internet data in
the country. If the individuals uses these internet data in attempt to cause damage or harm the society
or the country as a whole, the government however has the right to restrict access in that area or the
country; the internet data information are blocked and cannot be access or used by the individuals. This
however contribute to the extension of the gab since individuals have restricted access to the internet.
