MAJOR MOBILE OPERATORS

Broadband internet access
• Vodafone Ghana (Ghana Telecom, One Touch), that provides 2G and 3G internet access. Mostly
used by business companies for running huge amount of data.

• MTN Ghana (formerly ScanCom, Spacefon Areeba), that provides 2G internet access, but the
internet tends to be weaker in some areas, mostly up in the North side of the country where users
had to climb trees and high mountains in other to get internet access. 3G, 4G and or, LTE internet
access. Although 3G and 4G is the fastest internet access in Ghana, most internet users across the
country prefer not to use MTN because it’s much expensive as compared to other mobile operators
or internet service providers, for instance, Tigo or Airtel or Vodafone. Fast in uploading and
downloading off and on the internet. This means more money has to be spent monthly or weekly to
top-up the internet. It is fast but much expensive. Mostly used by private business companies for
running huge amount of data.

• Tigo (Millicom Ghana, Mobitel), Network development and coverage of Merger with Airtel
Ghana. It provides 2G, 3G and or, LTE. It is less expensive and faster network, mainly used in the
Southern and Northern part of the country, Accra, Cape Coast or Takoradi. It is the most common
used internet network in the country, mostly used for small internet research work or streaming
internet videos, etc.

The Cost of Accessing the Online Services.

There are many internet packages in Ghana but mainly, users prefer Vodafone Ghana or Airtel or Tigo.
This is because the speed of the internet is faster and it’s much less expensive to use or buy internet
data bundle. Like I said earlier on, internet users prefer not to use MTN mainly because it’s much
expensive, but faster internet servicing or accessibility. An MTN internet bundle, streaming online takes
1GB per hour.

Reliability of Connections

4G MTN internet network is the fastest internet connection in Ghana. In some areas for instance, the
Northern part of the country and in areas where there is no satellite connection or antenna, where
internet connection tends be slow, 4G OR LTE mobile or broadband internet is used to increase the
speed of the internet. Not reliable at many times, especially MTN or Surfline.
