FEAR OF TECHNOLOGY
Many people do not use technology because they:
Are not confident in their own ability to use computer skills.
Fear that others will laugh at their attempts, therefore it is easier not to try.
Think they will cause a computer problem as they experiment and therefore prefer not to
try.
Have heard or read news reports about computer fraud, Internet scams and identity theft.
Fear that they will be killed, especially when using social networking sites for instance,
Facebook, Twitter or Snapchat that uses navigational satellite to locate where they live. They
fear that they will be attack by burglars; using their location to identify where they live.
Fear of bully or sexual harassment.
Fear of unemployment from governmental projects or jobs. Many people don’t use ICT
mainly because they think their social media information will be used against them in job
application.
Fear that they are being watched and they don’t have their own privacy.
GEOGRAPHICAL FACTOR
Availability of the Internet throughout the world shows large differences between world reasons.
This can be a result of:
Lack of internet access - not strong or weaker internet connectivity. This can lead to
frustration and it is much easier not to use it. Lack of satellite or weak signal. Some areas lack
internet connectivity because of the landscape and also it is expensive to transport
telecommunication cables across the whole area.
Language - difficult to understand language concept of ICT tools. For instance, many
people find it difficult finding the keys and arrows on a Spanish keyboard. Difficult to
read and understand what the ICT tool is offering.
Culture - many people believe that access to the internet is a source of sinister to their
object of worship and could bring different aspects or understanding of the world
around them and could bring division between their object of worship, therefore it is
pure/immaculate not to try. Some communities believe that with access to internet
people tend to be smart and highly educated and they tend not to follow or respect
their traditions or speak their local languages, therefore it is better not to use it.
