ARE YOU READY – THE JOURNEY BEGINS…
PREHISTORIC DESIGN: Man has created illustrations since the beginning of time- on rocks, in
caves and in rock shelters. An example of a culture that painted during this time was the SAN
PEOPLE. The rock was his canvas and he made his own paints. These very beautiful paintings
can be seen in various parts of South Africa. The largest number of these paintings are found in the
Drakensberg near Mont-Aux-Sources. These images communicated their way of life.

In ANCIENT EGYPT, all knowledge was considered
impersonal. Any painting, drawing, sculpture or design
had to be submitted to a priest for final scrutiny. There
were strict rules regarding the way that people had to be
illustrated and what colours they had to use.

typical Egyptian convention in painting.
THE GREEKS strove towards perfection in all they did. They admired the human anatomy and
wisdom. They were known for their naturalistic sculptures and stylised vase painting. These vases
are extremely beautiful. The vases’ shape and form were specifically designed for its function.
