Visual Literacy: Develop research skills creating a class presentation
about the role of the designer
Throughout history, designers have created images that showed the times in which
they lived. Some of them have been exciting times – times of change, times of war,
times of peace, as well as our modern time today. The history of design styles and
developments traces an interesting course...
Now it is your chance to become the teacher! We know that you have
been dreaming about this moment for soooooooo long!
The class must be divided into five groups. You are going to be taking a closer look at the various
roles of a designer as well as the different contexts that design operates in so that you can
broaden your understanding of this powerful force we call design! Each group will be responsible
for teaching the rest of the learners about the particular a particular role and context by
presenting to the class a design case study. Now that is quite a big responsibility! Your group will
be assigned a context and allocated a lesson to present your information to the class. Your
presentation must be 5 minutes long. You will be receiving individual marks for the section of work
that you personally present to the class, as well as a group mark. Refer to the rubric for mark
allocation. Please do not bore the class – you must make your lesson exciting!
The contexts are: business, technological, social, environmental and “design for real change”

Your group’s context: .......................................................................................................................
Your group needs to cover at least four of the following topics within your presentation (write down the
name of the person who will be presenting the section):
1. The problem and how the design solved the problem: unpack how the design solved the
problem and how it functions throughout its life cycle
2. The context in which the design operates: place, target market, the macro environment, the
influences
3. The specifications of the design: materials, size, characteristics, processes and manufacturing
4. The designer or design company their background, influences, innovations, techniques, the role
they are fulfilling in the world around them- how are they contributing, observing and commenting
on society?
5. A visual analysis of this work using the art elements and design principles.
Remember to add in a lot of your own thoughts and opinions about the designer and their work. Your
interpretation and personal expression is important. Remember to substantiate your ideas though!
