Art has often influenced design styles. It is important that you are able to recognise the following
styles:
IMPRESSIONISM
After the Renaissance, art became increasingly naturalistic. Then, during the second half of the
19th century, a very different type of painting emerged in France. It was called Impressionism.
Monet, Pissaro, Cassat and Renoir were Impressionist painters during this time. This style is
characterized by definite brushstrokes, optical blending and a loss of detail and form. Looking at
one of their paintings it may seem like colours in chaos – yet when you look from far the
brushstrokes and colour merge to form a vibrant, visual experience.
