THE ROMANS developed many of the ideas the Greeks had formulated. The Romans were an
extremely proud and powerful nation. They also went on to pass on valuable rules regarding mural
design and the plastering of walls. The Greek and Roman art and design is referred to as the
Classical period.

After the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5 century, civilisation collapsed in Europe and there was
little great art produced. Designers continued to produce utilitarian objects. The Roman Empire
collapsed due to the barbarian invasions. This period is known as the Dark Ages. Art was mainly
practiced in monasteries. Guilds were started in Florence, Italy. Often the doctor, chemist and the
artist and designer would work together to make dyes, paints and metal alloys. The MIDDLE AGES
followed this period, when society began to recover.
