The History of Credit Scores

If I asked you how you could check your credit scores right now, you’d probably tell me

you’ve got a free FICO check through your bank or credit card company. You might also

open an app and show me your scores, too.

But think about this: What if we were living in the 1800s and not the present day? How

would you know what your credit scores were?

You see, before the advent of the internet, there was no easy way to get your credit scores.
In fact, your “credit score” is something that’s only been around since the 60’s.

Before then, credit scores were more of a regional thing, and before then, they were hyper-
local.

The Days Before Credit Bureaus

So, let’s say it’s the late 19th century and you’re looking to get a loan to buy materials to
build a home. You go to the bank and sit down with the bank’s president.
