photograph and instead, stood before me, with no recognition or pleasure on her face, was a
Russian Army Colonel.
At last, I had met my real mother, my long wait was over. I wanted to hug her and kiss her and I
wanted her to hug me and tell me how her heart had ached at not seeing me and I wanted her to
tell me she loved me just as I loved her.
We did neither. Instead, she shook my hand, took a piece of paper from her pocket, and read out a
long message in Russian. When she had finished reading, she passed me her half of the ten-dollar
bill. The Military applauded and she marched away without as much as a backward glance. I never
saw her again.
I realised what a complete fool I had been. I had given them the opportunity to indoctrinate me
because I believed my Mother wanted to see me as much as I wanted to see her and now I could see
I was not her loving son and never had been. I had been conceived just to complete her American
cover story. I meant no more to her than her forged American Passport or her forged American
driving licence. I too was a forgery. I meant nothing and now I was trapped in Moscow.
They gave me a flat and a companion who escorted me everywhere. They changed the companion

and taught how to be a subversive. I threw myself into this with vigour because I could see this was
the only way out of Russia.”
I stopped the tape and spooled through to near the end of the conversation.
‘Now tell me about the memo. What did it say and how did you come by it?
‘It was a memo from Langley. It stated that I was to receive nearly seven million dollars in the next
teo weeks and I was given instructions to forward this to a private bank in London. Normally that
would be all I would receive but it went on to give the name of the recipient. I definitely should not
have received that. The memo also mentioned Guatemala and the Chinese Communist influence
there. I guessed the money would be used to stir up trouble for the Chinese.’
So what did you do with it?’
‘I was up to my neck in debt to the mafia bookies. I honestly thought I would be dead within weeks,
the Mafia had already sent a couple of heavies round. I thought my only way out would be to use
the memo as blackmail. It gave the name of the recipient, who I guessed would be MI6, but no
contact number. I rang the bank and explained that I needed to speak with Mr. Alladyce and they
