‘It’s D I Harvey, says it’s important.’

I took the phone and listened. ‘God no! I’ll come straight away.’

I handed the phone back to Bren.

‘What is it Bryant? You look shaken.’

‘Tell George something’s come up. There’s been another murder.’

                                                          *****

I pulled up outside the bureau and parked right behind the Police car. I was expected for a uniform

opened the door for me with no questions asked.

‘We are in the back. ’Inspector Harvey called out. ‘It’s alright SOCO have finished here.’

I went through to the back office; Harvey and his sergeant were sitting at a table. I joined them in
            the spare chair.

            ‘What happened?’ I asked.

‘Within fifteen minutes of us leaving here on Tuesday, Mrs. Corbett was attacked and badly beaten.
She was taken to hospital unconscious and the incident was being treated as a robbery, although
nothing was taken. She passed away without having regained consciousness yesterday afternoon.
That was when I became aware of what had happened. A post mortem was carried out last night,
which showed she had been injected with Succinylcholine Chloride.

            ‘God no.’ I muttered

‘ You were obviously correct in assuming you had a tail but when they couldn’t keep up with
Sergeant Earls driving they came back here to see what we had taken.’

I sat still and could not speak. A lovely middle aged, rosy faced woman who looked as though she
should have been at home wearing a pinafore and baking bread, had become enmeshed in an
International Intelligence debacle and now lay on a pathologists slab.

‘Bryant, I know you are hamstrung by official secrets and I respect what you said about never being
able to get a conviction because of diplomatic immunity but we cannot simply do nothing and let a
psychopath roam British streets. Whatever it is you are working on has already accounted for three
            deaths.’

            ‘Four.’

            ‘Four?’

‘Yes, I believe my wife was also killed by the same person or persons.’

‘Your wife? For God’s sake Bryant you have to give us some kind of lead. Where will this all end? My
Superintendent would really appreciate it if you made a statement.’
