‘In an official statement I would be able to tell you nothing whatsoever but I will try and explain
what is going on. The body at the Hayes and Harlington mortuary first. You correctly identified him
as Mick Hagley but everyone believed him to be someone else. It was thought he was trying to
blackmail someone in MI6 or he would expose an intelligence service operation.

My wife, who worked in the MI6 building, revealed his presence here but she too was not aware of
his true identity. I do not have any idea why she was killed. Her murder was made to look like an
accident but Frank Furlong, who investigated her death on behalf of MI6, proved otherwise. Frank
revealed the details of her murder to me and subsequently was murdered himself.

Mrs Corbett was killed when she was being questioned about the possibility of details of the
intelligence operation being kept on these premises, hence the ransacking of the security boxes.

I am involved in an investigation which is centred on the man in the mortuary drawer or to be more
accurate, the man everyone believe is in the drawer. My investigation will, I believe, also reveal my
wife’s killer. I am sorry to be so vague but I really cannot tell you more.’

‘Are you in danger, Bryant? Please call me or Earl at any time if you need help.’

‘At the moment, I think not but thanks for the offer.’

I knew I would have to be extremely careful who I informed when I eventually found the memo.

‘I know you want to investigate these murders, Inspector but you might easily put my investigation
at risk. Whilst I believe I will eventually unearth the person or persons responsible and I know this
sounds like a cliché, that information pales into insignificance against the backdrop of the damage
to our country which will ensue if I am unsuccessful in my investigations. If there is the slightest
chance that your investigation compromises British Intelligence, then a D notice will be slapped on
everything. What I am investigating really is that serious. I promise as soon as I know the person or
persons responsible I will give them to you.’

I left with a very heavy heart.

Four people were now dead and for what, for machinations in a country the other side of the
World, a country that none of them knew anything about or perhaps ever wanted to know, even
            my wife?

I had to make certain there were no more victims. I had to ensure no harm came to Gabriela.
Whoever had been tailing me would be aware she had stayed with me and that we had flown to
Spain together. She would be safest with her URNG friends around her but I also needed to know
where the memo she had given me originated.
